If you follow me on Twitter (or Facebook), you’ve surely seen my many long winded posts, debates, and diatribes. But, there are only so many times you can hit that 140 character limit before you throw your McRib sandwich in unholy anger at the realization you need a blog. Sadly, I’ve been down this road before. I have no idea — correction: I have too many ideas I wish to write about.
But, as many people already know, it doesn’t take much to get me talking about that well-kept secret in southeastern America. Most know her as Birmingham. And whether it’s our established culinary scene, growing arts community, beautiful terrain, pivotal place in history, or large membership in the cult of college football (I’m a proud, card-carrying member) I’m surely somewhere talking about it. I suppose, now, I’ll be writing about it as well. Besides, more people should know about the good things in Birmingham. Including people in Birmingham.
I’m sure, however, that the Magic City won’t be the only thing I drone on and on about. I know just enough about cooking to be dangerous. So expect more pics of medium rare steaks at odd hours of the night. Also, I’m a huge advocate for social media. Well — new media, actually — but for the sake of brevity, we’ll just go with the former. Pardon any cheesiness, but I’ve seen, firsthand, how technology can change lives. Social media has fueled revolutions, forged new relationships, facilitated business opportunities, and fostered community engagement. (Did I mention how much I like alliteration?) It’s one of the reasons that I’ve been fortunate enough to do what I do.
I passionately follow the topics of new urbanism and smart growth (Andrés Duany fans will understand that). It’s not the best for my sanity but I’m also a political junky (anyone can understand that). And for the useless tidbit of the day: I’ve been known to eat souse meat from time to time (no one will understand that).
Hopefully, this blog will gain more focus and clarity over time. But, in the meanwhile, enjoy the haphazard (and serendipitous?) ride.
